There is also the "Build it and they will come" model. While highly criticized, it works for solutions that solve a painful problem and is priced right. It also helps if the solution is unique.

Tiny companies can sell to IT departments with nothing but a website and a buy button. I have no sales organization, yet I have dozens of Fortune 500 customers and over half my customers are International. I rarely have any pre-sale communication with customers. They just try and buy. Check out some of my customer testimonials that include real names and companies.

Jesus,

This was a really interesting blog. In my circles, there is a similar network for church planters called Exponential (www.exponential.org). In envision developing something like it on a smaller scale and focused in the city of Philadelphia; although, I'd much rather be doing it in Miami!

Have a great day!

Yup, that is why I wanted to start a company with a charter that restricts the number of staff to (approximately) that of a football team. If you want to take on a bigger job that needs more people, split the company in two, and the owners get a chunk of each. That way, each resulting company remains small and (in theory) nimble, and the owners get a gradually diversifying portfolio.

Excellent advice as I begin the plans for a new venture in our lives. I really appreciate your sound reasoning and counsel. Pray for me, my friend, as I work on a vision that is larger than me; development that is highly dependent upon strategic partnerships; well-formulated goals and objectives shared effectivly with partners through well-planned and orchestrated communication systems; and lastly, old-fashioned hard work! Blessings...
